A Summer of Laughter and Learning

This summer, the Spokane School of Improv hummed with creativity, laughter, and joy as we successfully completed three exciting summer camps: All Day Improv, Fun with Improv, and Sketch Camp. These camps provided students, aged 7 to 18 years old, with the opportunities to express themselves, collaborate with peers, and develop their performance skills in a fun, supportive environment. Each camp offered a unique experience with a curriculum geared to the different age groups. If you had walked through our blue door, you would have found students laughing and encouraging each other as they learned together.

All Day Improv was our first all-day camp ever, and it was an incredible experience for students and faculty. It was a full immersion into the world of improv and the art of performance. Over the course of a week, students explored various forms of improv, including games, characters, and movement. The students participated in four different classes: Improv Fundamentals, Character, Voice & Movement, and Improv Games. The camp was an excellent opportunity for students to hone their skills and apply them both on stage and in everyday life.

Fun with Improv was a fun half-day camp designed for those looking to break out of their comfort zones and unleash their imaginations. This camp focused on interactive games, storytelling, and imaginative play, helping students develop confidence and creativity. Students were encouraged to think differently and try something they never thought they could do.

Sketch Camp was a half-day camp that provided an engaging introduction to sketch comedy and learning the fundamentals of writing engaging stories. Students learned how to generate fresh ideas, develop characters, heighten scenes, and write and revise sketches. After writing their sketches, students had the opportunity to perform their scripts in front of an audience.

All three camps concluded with a showcase where students had the chance to share their newfound skills with friends and family. The showcases were a celebration of the creativity and teamwork that the students had been experiencing at the camps. It was so great to see students’ family and friends come out and support their students and to see everything they learned. The youth engaged in imaginative scenes, developed funny sketches, and demonstrated a core principle of improv – make your partner look good. The showcases were a testament to the hard work and enthusiasm each student brought to their camp experience.

Each of our camps was led by experienced faculty, who ensured that every student felt supported and encouraged to take risks in their learning. Whether your child is an aspiring performer or simply looking for a fun way to build life skills, our camps offered opportunities for growth, creativity, and, most importantly, fun.

We are thrilled with the success of our summer camps and cannot wait to see our students continue their improv journey and take their skills to the next level. As the new academic year starts in the fall, we will be offering monthly classes for youth.
