We are dedicated to the advancement of improvisation and the performing arts through innovative entertainment and education.
Proudly founded in 1996 by Mark Robbins, Unexpected Productions: Spokane was the first incarnation of The Blue Door Theatre, with shows every Friday night.
After four years of performing in a variety of spaces, the company moved to their own location in downtown Spokane. Here, with the help of Jason and Harmony Frederick, the troupe officially became The Blue Door Theatre, a 501c(3) certified non-profit arts organization. It was so named because the front door was blue.
In 2002 the BDT moved to its current location in the Garland district. Since its creation, the BDT has been an all-volunteer organization. Our performers, box office staff and board of directors volunteer their time and talent.
In January 2023, the BDT opened the Spokane School of Improv to expand our class offerings.
